Intercultural

Interlocking identities. Coalescing customs. Tangential traditions.

What do we mean when we say the word ‘culture’? It invokes norm, values. A culture entails the process by which we engage and interact. Through cultures we educate, construct civilisations, cultivate growth.

Identities, customs and traditions inform cultures. They shape who we are and determine what roles we choose to play in the world. Multiple cultures co-exist. As such, our world is often described as a ‘melting pot’ wherein cultures overlap, intertwine and combine.

I am the quintessential third-culture kid; my very being is intercultural. I find my identity at the intersections of multiple cultures. As a British-Irish-Pakistani-Punjabi-Muslim-woman, I honour my hyphens. They bridge my belongings. They enrich my culture.

Inquisitive by nature, I decided to read for an MA in South Asia & Global Security at King’s College London. Combining my lived experiences and academic expertise, I offer cultural commentary. My approach is to remain positive about plurality, whilst not shying away from the negative aspects of cultures. My unique position at the intersection of cultures enables me to vocalise the nuances across divides, remaining measured, whilst effectively articulating advocacy.

Shameless - Women of the World Festival

October 2021. It was a pleasure and privilege to share a platform with such dignified women WOW - Women of the World Festival and Birkbeck, University of London #ShamelessFestival reception, where I spoke about my #BreakingSilenceOnSpiritualViolence #EndSpiritualAbuse United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) #Edin campaign. A big thank you in particular to Prof Joanna Bourke and Jude Kelly CBE (Founder of WOW) for making this possible, and of course to HRH The Duchess of Cornwall Clarence House - The Prince of Wales & The Duchess of Cornwall for such a moving and inspiring speech. To close the reception, I was invited to perform my spoken word, The Myth of Masculinity. This is the first spoken word I wrote back in the peak of the pandemic (September 2020). One year on, it seems so surreal that #shiftwithmaryyum has really come into being, Alhamdulilah. Onwards and upwards, may we continue to persevere, fearlessly.

Capturing Cultural Currents

SOAS COP

As a postdoctoral researcher on the SOAS ‘Corridors of Power’ (COP) I produce pertinent policy briefings and reports to address the democratic deficit and increase social impact of academic research within Parliament. Policy areas include: BAME inclusion in the educational sector; social inequalities and disparities, and COVID-19; BAME representation and intersectionality in women and minority affairs, and violence against women and girls amidst COVID-19.

A marriage does not just come down to 'love' or 'arranged'

15 July 2012. Love doesn't automatically warrants ‘bahayai’ [lewdness] or ‘baygairati’ [shame]. It is a natural phenomenon; embrace it. I often speak on cultural taboos surrounding human relationships. My cultural commentary focuses on the schism between social enforcement and imposition, and the desperate need to uphold consent and autonomy.
